New revised "Made in Canada" Guidelines
The Competition Bureau has revised its Guide to "Made in Canada " Claims. The Enforcement Guidelines relating to "Product of Canada " and "Made in Canada " Claims (the "Guidelines") distinguish between "Product of Canada" and "Made in Canada " claims. "Product of Canada " claims will be subject to a higher threshold of Canadian content (98%), while "Made in Canada " claims will remain subject to a 51% threshold of Canadian content but must be accompanied by a qualifying statement. In both cases, the last substantial transformation of the product must have occurred in Canada . These Guidelines come into effect July 1, 2010. For more detailed information on how these revised Guidelines may affect your marketing representations visit the Competition Bureau's web site at http://competitionbureau.gc.ca/eic/site/cb-bc.nsf/eng/03169.html .

Jewellers Vigilance Canada (JVC) would like to thank all those companies/individuals for their sponsorship/donation supporting JVC's 13th Annual Golf tournament on Monday, June 22nd.  This year's tournament was held at the prestigious Angus Glen Golf Club located in Markham, Ontario.  The Tournament was played on the south course which tested some of the world's finest players during the 2002 Bell Canadian Open, and some of our industry's finest this past June.  It was a picture perfect day, with 122 industry members participating making it a tremendous success.

You will be pleased to know that your contribution helped us raise a record amount.  Through participation from supporters like you, (for a complete list, CLICK HERE) JVC is able to continue to level the playing field for the Canadian Jewellery and Watch Industry and our work towards a better and safer marketplace for jewellers.

We hope you will join us again next year, and continue strengthening our industry through JVC. We will be returning to Angus Glen Golf Club in 2010.

Mark your calendars for Monday, June 21st, 2010.

Once again, our sincere thanks

Anti-money Laundering Legislation and the Canadian Jewellery Industry
As we reported in our last ACTION UPDATE the jewellery industry has been identified as a stakeholder group included in Bill C-25. What this means is that industry will have to conform to an Anti-Money Laundering Compliance Regime under law.

Some key components to these regulations for industry will probably include:

  1. Reporting and recording of all cash transactions $10,000.or more to FINTRAC.
  2. Reporting of all suspicious or attempted suspicious transactions to FINTRAC.
  3. Compliance program.

Once the regulations are confirmed, JVC along with the CJA and CBQ will assist industry in understanding the regulations and developing a compliance regime. For more information please visit JVC website www.jewellersvigilance.ca and FINTRAC at www.fintrac.gc.ca
